VLA Graphic Novel Diversity Award Winners for 2016 Announced
The Diversity & Inclusion Forum of the Virginia Library Association announced the 2016 winners of the VLA Graphic Novel Diversity Award. I'm thrilled that GUMBALLS (Issue 1) was listed in the "Overfloweth Titles", which the committee assigns to work that meet the high standards of quality literature and that they would recommend reading.
Gumballs by Erin Nations. Top shelf Productions.
Erin rides his bike to work, deals with depression and anxiety, and just goes about his everyday life as a transgender man. Gumballs is a fantastic glimpse into Erin's life as well as getting to know Tobias, and meeting Phillip and Ezra. Gumballs is important because it is a rare autobiographical depiction of being transgender, which greatly impacts public perceptions and visibility.

SOU'WESTER ARTIST RESIDENCY
The Sou'Wester Lodge is located in Seaview, Washington on the Long Beach Peninsula. It's about 15 miles north of Astoria, Oregon. While guests can book a room in the main lodge or dwell in a cabin, the most alluring place to stay is in one of the vintage trailers and airstreams.
Last week I had the pleasure of staying at the Sou'Wester. During my residency, I resided in a vintage trailer for five days and worked on issue four of my comic book series, Gumballs.
Calm and quiet are the best words to describe my time there. It was very peaceful. For the most part, the only sounds I heard came from the podcasts I listened to, the birds chirping outside my window, vinyl records spinning, and two days of solid rain. Overall, it gave me a distraction-free place to work.
Every day I woke up at 5 AM, made coffee, and began working. By 10 PM, I'd put my pen down, and go to bed.
To break up the monotony and avoid cabin fever, I made a couple trips into Long Beach and walked on the beach.
By the end of my visit, I felt a sense of achievement. I was pleased with my output.
You can read more about my time at the Sou'wester in Gumballs, Issue 4 (Release Date TBA)

VISION QUEST 7 RELEASE PARTY
The 7th issue of Vision Quest, Portland Oregon’s FREE comic newspaper, arrives this March! Vision Quest is a collaborative effort, published and distributed by local comix writers and artists. We are excited to host a release party and art exhibit to celebrate the latest issue. Featuring artwork by Sophie Franz, Josh Simmons, Lark Pien, Alex Chiu, Jason Sturgill, Erin Nations and many many more!
Tim Goodyear (Teenage Dinosaur / Video Tonfa), one of the publishers and contributors elaborated on the inspiration behind it saying “Vision Quest is a boiler plate we got from The Intruder up in Seattle. I have been bummed on the commercial structure of comics for a long time and have tried many times to get comics to folks with out all the barriers that are in place. Ian Sundahl asked me how The Intruder paper was structured and I told him what Max Clotfelter had told me. He asked if I’d want to do that here, I said I wasn’t sure. 6 or 8 months later he asked me again and I said yes. It’s been great. I love it.”
“Money is gross,” Goodyear says. “Money is a terrible obstacle for the growth of comics. People think they like comics but most don’t really know—finding, choosing and paying for them is not something I see much. Mini comics have such small quantities that few people ever get to see them. How can an artist get seen and find the audience who will love them?” The solution? Vision Quest. “It’s free so we don’t need to be present and their curiosity is the only cost,” Goodyear says, speaking of the paper’s various drop-off locations, scouted by the artists and publishers.
